Born in 1966, Dubrey grew up at the foot of the South Downs. She attended Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, receiving a postgraduate diploma from the latter in 1992. A subsequent spell of five years in Normandy was followed by a move to West Cornwall to immerse herself fully in the artistic heritage of the area that has always been a vital inspiration to her creative process.

Spontaneity is key in Dubrey’s paintings with the unpredictability of outcome providing a drive to create. Having lived in West Penwith for nearly 20 years, she believes she is absorbed into nature’s rhythms,  finding depth and understanding in this secluded environment, just like Sándor Végh advocated for his young musicians visiting IMS Prussia Cove. Forever inspired, especially by the St Ives School ‘mid-generation’ artists, Dubrey’s bold abstract and figurative paintings resonate with a vibrancy and draw inspiration from both the rugged landscape and, more intimately, with books and magazines that connect her to the wider world.

“An abstracted figure-like form stands majestically, centrally on the arid, canvas coloured ground within the composition of ‘Cantos’, flamboyantly proclaiming its song.”

Dubrey exhibits with Edgar Modern Bath, Belgrave Gallery St Ives and Lynne Strover Gallery Cambridge.

Henrietta Dubrey is represented by Edgar Modern, Bath.
